The high school football regular season is nearly upon us, and the News 18 Sports team can’t wait to get it going.
We’ll be bringing you the best highlights from the key games each week every Friday night on Sports Overtime, but we don’t stop there. Make sure to check out our score updates on Twitter (#ecscores) and on the wqow.com website Cover It Live blog throughout the evening. And, if you want discussion and analysis, you’ll want to go back to the website for the award-winning Sports Overtime Online Wrap.
There are some great games coming up, starting in week one:
Somerset vs. Bloomer – A rematch of last season’s WIAA Division 4, Level 4 playoff game, won by the Spartans. Two perennially strong programs going at it in a great venue in Bloomer.
Kenosha Bradford vs. Hudson – Last year’s WIAA Division 1 state champion travels across the state to visit the Raiders, one of the Big Rivers Conference favorites.
Menomonie vs. Merrill – Joe LaBuda’s Mustangs will play the first three games without ten suspended players, but if any program can overcome that handicap, it’s Menomonie.
Baldwin-Woodville vs. St. Croix Central – On a night with plenty of local rivalry games (Durand vs. Mondovi, Stanley-Boyd vs. Cadott), this one stands out, as a Panthers team that’s looking to win another Dunn-St. Croix Conference title and kicks off its season against the Blackhawks, who hope to contend in the Middle Border.
La Crosse Logan vs. EC North, EC Memorial vs. La Crosse Central - The traditional opener matches teams from western Wisconsin’s two largest cities. The Old Abes will look to continue their recent history of success, while the Huskies hope to start strong for third-year head coach Ben King.
See you at the games, on the air, and online!
