Shine on, shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky,

Maybe
you’ve heard the song, but what exactly is a “harvest moon?”

By
definition it is the first full moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal (fall)
Equinox. Typically it occurs in
September, but about every three or four years it will fall in early October. According to folklore the “harvest moon”
shines brighter, so at the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night
by the light of the moon. In the days before tractor lights, farmers depended
on the bright moon to get their crops harvested in a timely matter.

This
year the Harvest Moon will take place on Monday, September 15, at 5:13 a.m.
EDT.
